JEANNE DIELMAN, 23 QUAI DU COMMERCE, 1080 BRUXELLES
Production: Belgium, 1975
Director: Chantal Akerman
Category: Experimental
Fictional verité-style document, lasting over three hours and with long sections shot in real time, of the daily routine of a woman (played by Delphine Seyrig) living in Brussels with her teenage son. In order to support him, she works as a prostitute in the afternoons. Akerman’s film zeros in on the day when her regimented life falls to pieces; perhaps experiencing pleasure with a client, she cracks at the intrusion of human emotion, surrenders to desperation, and stabs him to death with a pair of scissors. Probably the best-known film by Akerman, who has been likened to a female, or feminist, counterpart to the likes of Fassbinder or Godard.
